I heard the very sad news yesterday that Guernsey would not now be taking in Refugee's and today I see on the BBC page this statement from Jonathan Le Tocq:
"There's certainly a lot of Islamaphobia and negativity that's been around. That would entail it would be difficult for us to ensure they would find the security and stability here in Guernsey were they to be resettled here in the same way as in other parts of the UK."
Most already know my stance on this issue and I have publicly stated that I would have had a family to live with me at the drop of a hat, and taken responsibility for them too. However experiencing the level of horrid comments that have come from people here in Guernsey, I am truly shocked to the core, but I understand his statement per se, indeed we had a conversation along those very lines! What I do not condone is that it means we are ‘giving in’ to people who have not looked into the issues in any depth, and in many cases have taken media and statements on face value, instead of digging down to find out the truth.
I also do firmly believe that IF there was a genuine WILL for refugees to come here – we could make it happen – after all we make our own laws and what is to stop one being make specifically for this purpose?
I truly do not believe there is sufficient will!
The sad fact is that the media have peddled propaganda from the get go and too many people are sucked into this shallow reporting of inaccuracies.
What a desperate legacy to leave behind – when our children ask what we did to help the Refugee’s the answer will be ‘nothing’ ON our wonderful Island! Our Island is one of the most giving and caring places in the world and the amount raised for charity is staggering and I believe to be some of the highest in the world, but what a sadness if this allows us to block out the suffering of others in other lands too. There are various Guernsey based charities doing wonderful work across the world, but I can bet none of them have seen the level of hatred spewed from the mouths of some on this issue alone.
I have had many many messages over night from people who are really saddened by this decision and who tell me they too would have taken in a family at no cost to the States.
Enough is enough. #IStand for our common Humanity, Equality, Truth, Peace and Justice for All!
We are speaking of people – one planet – one world - it shouldn’t be divisive and selective but sadly it is and our Island has shown itself to be totally selective.
What a sad day in our Island’s history!
Goodness knows what will happen when we need help……
