The obvious community spirit and enthusiasm of local sporting clubs in Guernsey is evident in their commitment to both their sport and development of their team members.
Since Sarah began her work in Sri Lanka she has been welcomed into the community with open arms. During one such visit she was invited to be the guest of honour by Sesca All Island Sri Lankan Swimming Club at their forthcoming annual swimming Gala.
Sarah was so touched by this gesture that on her return to Guernsey we felt as a charity that we could do more to support this event. We contacted Guernsey Swimming Club and they were so inspired they wanted to become involved with the event. They donated two shields to be presented to the most improved swimmer boy / girl, as the club could only afford to present photocopied certificates to the competitors for their achievements. They have also gave t-shirts for the swimming coach and have indicated they would like to continue to assist them if possible! The momentum continued and local company Le Coin Trophies donated a cup to be presented to the best overall champion at the Gala.
Thus the concept of ‘Building Bridges through Sport’ was established…….
The obvious community spirit and enthusiasm of local sporting clubs in Guernsey is evident in their commitment to both their sport and development of their team members. A comparison can be drawn with the various sports clubs in Sri Lanka in this respect, however for many of their team members it is also a valuable life line for them.
Since the Tsunami devastated many of their lives they have relied on their sports to help them through rehabilitation both mentally and in some cases physically. It gives them the opportunity to get together on a weekly basis and focus on an activity which can give themselves and the wider community so much pleasure.
The charity has helped to establish a relationship between Vale Rec Football Club in Guernsey and a local football club in Sri Lanka. We do not expect large monetary donations from their Guernsey counterparts but a proportion of the clubs time in contacting these clubs and supporting them were possible.
Vale Rec has sent these players their old football strips and Central Sports donated 10 footballs for the team. As you can see below they have just bought them a mower for the football pitch as the Sri Lankan team were relying on the cows to help them out!
