The Men's Space
When we arrived on the camp, the first thing the commander asked us "when will you create a men's space?"
Alongside establishing the other parts of our operations on the camp, we set to work renovating the space. The walls were filled and replastered, the ceiling was covered with plaster board and new lights fitted and we had the floor fully retiled. We had two rooms to work with, and a smaller room just off the main room which has since been turned into the community kitchen. One of the rooms was turned into a mini barbershop with a full set of equipment for the men to use. We installed a projector, a 3metre widescreen, tablefootball and WIFI (which was no mean feat!). There is now also a satellite connection, a portable bluetooth PA speaker with microphone and we recently bought a table tennis table which is wheeled out (daily) onto the concrete outside the men's space.
The biggest aim for this space was a sense of ownership. We didn't, and don't, want to interfere. We gave the guys the keys and told them it's all theirs! We made it clear that if anything would go missing or was broken due to mistreatment then we would not replace things.
Below is the transformation of the men's space. From what looked like a dungeon to the men's space as it is today!
